Are You Stuck in a Comparison Trap? Why It Feels Like You’re Always Behind in Life
The Hidden Cost of “I Should Be Further Ahead
Have you ever caught yourself thinking:
“I should be further ahead by now.”
“I should be doing more.”
“I should have figured this out.”
At first, it can sound like motivation.
But over time, it can start to feel like pressure.
And that pressure can quietly follow you through your day.
You might still be working, socialising, going to the gym, building your life…
…but part of your mind is somewhere else.
Thinking about what’s next.
What’s missing.
What you haven’t done yet.
And in those moments, something important gets lost:
The ability to actually be in your life while it’s happening.
Because when your attention is constantly on where you “should” be…
…it’s hard to fully experience where you already are.
What Are You Missing While You’re Comparing?
This is the part many people don’t realise.
The comparison trap doesn’t just affect productivity.
It affects presence.
It can show up as:
Struggling to relax, even during downtime
Feeling distracted in conversations
Finding it hard to enjoy achievements
Always thinking about the next thing
So even when things are going well…
…it doesn’t quite feel like it.
It’s almost like living slightly ahead of yourself.
Always chasing a version of life that hasn’t arrived yet.
And over time, that can feel exhausting.
The Neuroscience Behind Feeling “Behind
From a neuroscience perspective, this pattern is linked to how the brain responds to perceived threat and uncertainty.
When you compare yourself to others, or feel like you’re falling behind, the brain can interpret this as a social threat.
This activates the amygdala — the brain’s threat detection system.
Even though there’s no physical danger, your brain responds as if something isn’t safe.
This can lead to:
Increased stress hormones like cortisol
Heightened alertness and overthinking
A focus on what’s missing or not enough
At the same time, the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for clear thinking, decision-making, and perspective — becomes less effective under stress.
So the more pressure you feel…
…the harder it becomes to think clearly, prioritise, or take calm, consistent action.
This is why many people feel stuck despite wanting to move forward.
Why More Pressure Doesn’t Create More Progress
When your mind is filled with everything you “should” be doing, it can quickly become overwhelming.
This is sometimes referred to as cognitive overload, where the brain is trying to process too much at once.
And when that happens, the brain often shifts into protection mode.
That can look like:
Procrastination or avoidance
Starting things but not finishing them
Feeling mentally drained
Struggling to focus
So instead of moving forward…
…it can feel like you’re standing still.
Not because you’re not capable.
But because your brain is overloaded.
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Supports a Different Way Forward
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) works by supporting the brain to move out of this heightened stress response and into a calmer, more balanced state.
Rather than focusing on everything that feels wrong or missing, it gently supports you to begin noticing what’s already working.
This shift in attention matters.
Because the brain naturally follows where attention goes.
In sessions, clients are supported to:
Step away from constant comparison
Recognise small, meaningful progress
Develop a calmer internal dialogue
Focus on manageable, realistic next steps
The relaxation element of hypnotherapy supports the nervous system to settle, allowing the mind to become quieter and more receptive.
This can support:
Reduced overthinking
Improved clarity and focus
A greater sense of being present.
From “I Should Be” to Actually Living Your Life
One of the biggest shifts people notice is this:
They’re no longer just thinking about life…
They’re in it.
Moments feel more present.
Decisions feel clearer.
Progress feels more manageable.
And instead of constantly chasing where they think they should be…
They begin to feel like they’re moving forward in a way that actually works for them.
If This Feels Familiar
If you’ve been stuck in that loop of comparison, pressure, and feeling behind…
…it may not be about doing more.
It may be about creating the mental space to experience your life, while still moving forward.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a structured, supportive way to do this — helping you feel calmer, clearer, and more able to focus on what matters.
