Why Some People Aren’t (Yet) Responsive to Hypnotherapy
Hi - My name is Andy Selway-Woolley (he/him) and I’m a Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist. I run HeadFirst Hypnotherapy, based in Upper Heyford (near Bicester), Oxfordshire and also work online nationally.
Understanding what’s really happening when change doesn’t feel immediate - and why consistency matters
It’s Not Instant for Everyone — And That’s Normal
Some people feel better after just one session - especially with simple, specific issues like exam nerves or a phobia. But for many, especially those dealing with anxiety, overthinking, trauma, or long-standing habits, change is more gradual.
That’s because we’re working with deeply embedded neural patterns. And as reassuring as it would be, those don’t usually shift overnight.
Why Some People Don’t Respond Straight Away
The Brain’s Still in Survival Mode
When someone’s nervous system is on high alert - whether due to anxiety, trauma, or chronic stress - it’s harder for the subconscious to engage with suggestion. Future pacing and reframing can feel “flat” or even irrelevant if the brain is stuck in protection mode.
Highly Analytical or Overthinking Minds
People who constantly analyse or self-monitor may struggle to access the imaginative, feeling-based part of the brain that hypnosis works with. They’re often still “in their head” during hypnosis, which can limit its effectiveness.
Imagination Blocks or Resistance
If a client can’t visualise easily, doesn’t trust the process, or finds the reframe too far removed from their current reality, the subconscious may simply reject it. In these cases, more tailored, gentle work is needed to build connection and belief.
What’s Really Going On? Neuroplasticity in Action
The brain thrives on repetition. This is where neuroplasticity comes in - the brain’s ability to create new pathways and unlearn old ones. But like any habit or skill, this takes time.
Each time a client rehearses a new thought pattern or emotional response (in or out of hypnosis), they’re strengthening that neural pathway. The more often it happens, the more automatic it becomes.
Patience Is Part of the Process
In a world of quick fixes and instant results, it can feel frustrating when change takes time. But hypnotherapy is not just about “fixing” something - it’s about creating space for the brain to rewire and the body to feel safe again.
That’s why patience, consistency, and relationship are key:
It may take a few sessions to build emotional safety and trust
Repetition helps new thought patterns take root
Each session lays groundwork - even if the results aren’t obvious right away
What to Remember
“Hypnotherapy isn’t a magic wand - it’s a process that supports your brain in building new habits and responses. Some people feel a shift straight away. Others need time, repetition, and the right pace. It’s all valid.”
Final Thoughts: It’s Not About “Being Hypnotisable” — It’s About Readiness
Very few people are truly “unhypnotisable.” More often, they just haven’t found the right conditions for their mind to respond yet.
The great news? Responsiveness can grow. With the right support, the right timing, and a consistent approach, change becomes not only possible — but inevitable.
